President’s Day is legally recognized as Washington’s Birthday (the United States’ first president) however, many institutions and state governments refer to it as President’s Day. President’s Day is celebrated on the third Monday of every February and officially honors the life and work of George Washington however, it commemorates past presidents of the USA as well.
In the weeks or days leading up to the holiday, schools will organize lessons or events for students to learn about the presidents of the past with an emphasis on George Washington. Some states also include celebrations and school lessons for Abraham Lincoln (whose birthday is officially celebrated on or around February 12th).
George Washington was president from 1789-1797 having served two terms and his image can be seen on the one-dollar bill and the quarter-dollar coin. The capital of the United States, Washington D.C., Washington State and at least three universities are named after him.
George Washington’s birthday is officially February 22.
Many retail stores will also hold “President’s Day Sales” to recognize the federal holiday. President’s Day shopping sales have been an average of 46.7% off of apparel, shoes and accessories while the sales on Black Friday are an average of 42.1% off. So celebrate the past presidents of this country by buying new clothes for the spring time!
